Optimizing BSF Reproduction for Healthy Seedlings™
To maintain a steady flow of healthy Seedlings™, it all starts with ensuring the right conditions for Black Soldier Flies (BSF) to reproduce effectively. Our biology team carefully monitors every aspect of BSF reproduction, focusing on egg production, hatch rates, and colony health. Here’s the science behind it:
Male-to-Female Ratio
One of the most critical factors for successful reproduction is the balance between males and females. BSF females can lay anywhere from 500–900 eggs, but fertilization depends on having an optimal male-to-female ratio. Our biology team ensures that the male-to-female ratio is perfectly calibrated to maximize egg production and fertilization efficiency.
Mimicking Natural Egg-Laying Conditions in Our Fly Cages
BSF females are picky about where they lay their eggs. They prefer to deposit them in dry, sheltered crevices near organic waste—not on top of it. This behavior prevents the eggs from being exposed to moisture or predators. To replicate this in our fly cages, we use a specially designed grid system that mimics these ideal egg-laying environments.
Temperature and Humidity
For BSF eggs to hatch successfully, temperature and humidity need to be precisely controlled. BSF eggs thrive at temperatures between 27–30°C with a relative humidity of around 70%. Deviations outside this range can lead to poor hatch rates or even egg failure. We use automated climate control systems within our fly cages to keep the environment steady, ensuring that the eggs hatch at the highest possible rate.
Perfecting the BSF Reproduction Cycle
At LIVIN farms, we understand that the success of our Seedlings™ relies on the biology of BSF reproduction. By focusing on perfecting the ideal egg-laying conditions and optimizing environmental factors like temperature and humidity in our fly cages, we’re able to maintain a steady flow of healthy BSF larvae for organic by-products upcycling.
